Your personal finance questions – I have inherited a house. Will that stop me availing of the Help-to-Buy scheme?

You may not be precluded from claiming Help-to-Buy, as long as you have not bought property before

Q I have just inherited my father’s old family home, a cottage in Donegal. I live and work in Dublin and am planning to buy a new home in Dublin this year. This will be the first time I buy a property and so I had been hoping to avail of the Help-to-Buy (HTB) scheme. Does my recent inheritance preclude me from availing of HTB?

A If you have inherited, or been gifted, a property, you may not be precluded from claiming HTB, as long as you have not bought property before, said Ian Lawlor, managing director of Lotus Investment Group, which lends to developers.
