Karen Karniol-Tambour has been laser-focused on two things in her first year as co-chief investment officer of Bridgewater Associates: upholding the excellence of one of the largest hedge funds in the world while pushing the firm to evolve beyond its traditional purview.
“We’re so much more than a hedge fund,” she says. “That categorization doesn’t get to the heart of what we really do.”
Under Karniol-Tambour’s leadership, Bridgewater has doubled down on new ways to give institutional investors a “top-down” view on their portfolios—whether helping them navigate geopolitical and macroeconomic risks, or incorporating artificial intelligence into their investment processes.
“Our general mission to deeply understand what’s happening in markets and economies has resonated really deeply with employees and clients,” she says.
With two young children, Karniol-Tambour, 38, hasn’t had much spare time. But she hasn’t stopped mentoring new talent and empowering employees.
