Houston County hopes to keep pushing for water infrastructure project | WDHN

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — Houston County received $20 million through the American Rescue Plan Act and now they are planning to move forward and spend $5 million on a water infrastructure project.

“The goal is to run a 16-inch water line where center stage sits and BJ Fireworks sit on Highway 231, its already a 16-inch water line ran there, and its to connect to that line to run down here to the Florida state line and into the industrial park,” Houston County District 3 Commissioner Ricky Herring said.

Houston County Commissioner Ricky Herring said district three has sewage but the water is not flowing properly.

He said that’s an issue that must be fixed because it can open up avenues like new housing and business developments in the area.

“If the infrastructure is in place it makes it more enticing and inviting for those industries, and manufacturing plants, that want to come here and build and that, of course, create jobs for us which create sustainable revenue,” Herring said.

Herring said a little over a decade ago, they missed out on a major distribution service due to the lack of proper infrastructure.

He says it’s exciting to see one of the goals he came into office with coming to fruition.

The southern Houston County area has drawn a lot of interest in potential industries.

“To give the opportunity and the city to have the opportunity is gonna be good for Houston County, the city of Dothan, and the surrounding state,” Herring said.

Houston County commissioners will vote on the water infrastructure project during their meeting on Monday.
