The Cross-Platform Playbook with Bain Capital’s David Gross

On today’s episode of Dry Powder, my guest is David Gross, the co-managing partner of Bain Capital. Bain Capital is obviously one of the largest players in the private equity industry, but what truly sets it apart is the sheer variety of assets under its management. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find another firm that has mastered the multi-asset strategy at scale, but David argues they’re not merely amassing a highly diversified portfolio.

“We don’t regard ourselves as asset managers,” David says. “The strategy is to get cross synergies—it’s not just to get into a business and make it as big as it can be. And that’s what I like to look at as a cross-platform strategy, as different from a multi-asset strategy.”

Today on the show, David will take us inside the cross-platform playbook. We’ll explore the unique investment opportunities that can cut across a variety of asset classes and geographies. We’ll see how deal teams think laterally—from airline turnarounds to life sciences and commercial real estate—and we’ll also explore how this strategy emerged organically out of the firm’s talent-first culture.
