Change could be afoot for a 19th property at the heart of village

Change could be afoot at a Georgian manse now used as 5-star luxury accommodation at the heart of a Borders village.

A planning bid has been submitted to Scottish Borders Council to put a a solar panel array on its roof and replace windows at Dalkeith House in Newcastleton.

The 19th century property is located on the south-western corner of Douglas Square.

The house is not listed but it is located within the village Conservation Area.

Planning permission is sought to replace the single glazed timber windows on the east elevation, facing Douglas Square, and the south elevation, facing Langholm Street, with double glazed as part of thermal improvements to the external fabric of the building.

A report with the application says: “This application seeks to utilise development rights to improve the energy efficiency of Dalkeith House and secure the long-term future of the building.

“The owner of Dalkeith House fully understands the importance of the building within Douglas Square and the Conservation Area and the proposed replacement of the existing windows will be carried out in a sympathetic manner and to the highest quality possible.

“The panels will be installed at a pitch and position that will ensure minimal visibility from road level.”
