As of January 2024, internet connectivity in Latin America and the Caribbean has seen remarkable growth, with over 90% of residents in the Bahamas, Costa Rica, Antigua & Barbuda, and Chile being online, placing these countries at the forefront of internet access in the region. Similarly, more than 85% of the populations in Uruguay, the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Brazil, Guyana, and Jamaica are connected. In stark contrast, less than half of Haiti’s population has internet access. The overall internet penetration rate for Latin America stands at 74.63%.
Significant investments in 4G infrastructure, expected to reach approximately $211.5 billion by 2030, are driving this transformation, notably enhancing mobile connectivity across the region. Peru serves as a prime example, where the urban-rural digital divide significantly narrowed in 2021, resulting in Peru having the fifth-largest online audience in Latin America by 2023.
Despite these advancements, a considerable disparity in internet access remains. In 2023, South America boasted an internet penetration rate of 80.6%, whereas only 68.4% of the Caribbean population was online. Venezuela, despite substantial mobile connectivity investments, saw most of its web traffic from desktop devices, with only 70.9% of Ecuadorians accessing the internet via mobile devices in 2023.
