Surrey County Council’s Natalie Bramhall said the funding will “deliver significant, tangible improvements for our communities”

Five new infrastructure projects in Surrey worth £6.95m have been approved.

The projects include a new cycling and walking route, village improvements and two flood alleviation schemes.

The areas that will benefit from the funding include Godalming, Guildford, Reigate, Smallfield, Shalford and Compton.

Surrey County Council’s cabinet member for property, waste and infrastructure, Natalie Bramhall, said the scheme will “deliver significant, tangible improvements for our communities”.

The funding was approved by the council’s cabinet on Tuesday.

‘Tangible improvements’

A new 7km (4.34 miles) cycling and walking corridor between Guildford and Godalming will provide a continuous, safer travel route, while measures to slow traffic and enhance the public areas in Compton are under consideration, the council said.

A new road layout is to be considered in Kings Road, Shalford, while a new scheme will provide flood resilience measures for 84 high-risk properties in Reigate and 175 in Smallfield.

Measures will include the installation of flood doors, removeable flood barriers, non-return valves and air brick covers to minimise the impacts of flooding and protect local communities, the council said.

Ms Bramhall said: “This is about the council investing in Surrey – to improve the lives of our residents now and in the future.

“These five schemes will deliver significant, tangible improvements for our communities including those who have experienced the devastating impacts of flooding and our residents in Surrey villages where road safety is a concern.”

A total of £2.1m of the funding will come from the council, while the rest will come from external funding sources including developer contributions.
