For reasons currently unknown, a forest fire has broken out below the Adriatic Highway and, according to drivers and witnesses, is spreading rapidly towards the road leading to Bosanka. Drivers are being warned to avoid the highway to allow firefighters to reach the scene as easily and quickly as possible. The traffic is currently being diverted from the main road into side roads and needless to say traffic jams have formed.
Whether the fire was spontaneously ignited due to the intense heat or caused by some reckless driver throwing a cigarette butt from the window is still unknown.
This latest unfortunate incident once again underscores the vulnerability of the road infrastructure in the Dubrovnik region. As the main route to and from the airport, it has faced closures and blockages for various reasons over the past few weeks.
