Hundreds of walking and cycling infrastructure schemes to be prioritised in Warwickshire

OVER 300 walking and cycling infrastructure schemes will be ‘prioritised’ by Warwickshire County Council (WCC).

The council’s cabinet has approved the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP).

Although the plan does not commit the council to any new spending, WCC says it will strengthen the case for investment and increase opportunities for external funding.

A spokesperson said: “Adopting the Plan is essential for WCC to access Active Travel England funding and enables greater partnership working to maximise active travel investment opportunities in the county.”

The plan was approved following a consultation which received over 1,000 responses.

WCC transport spokesman Coun Jan Matecki said: “This plan is a significant step forward in making Warwickshire a place where people can choose to walk, wheel, or cycle for everyday journeys.

“By identifying potential new infrastructure and Active Travel Zones that would enable residents to switch to more active travel, it will help to improve the health and wellbeing of our communities, reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.

“Transport is the single largest cause of carbon emissions in the UK, and so in addition to opening the doors to more government funding, the adoption of this plan is critical if we are to meet our net zero commitments.

“We believe that the LCWIP will make a significant contribution to creating a more sustainable, healthy, and connected Warwickshire for everyone.”
