LANARK, Ill. (WIFR) – A grant of almost $1 million will go toward major repairs for Lanark’s water infrastructure, leaders announced Tuesday.
The money is part of a $123 million Congressional investment for improvement projects in northwest Illinois.
Leaders say the $959,752 grant award is the largest the city has ever received. Congressman Eric Sorensen touted the investment as a win for residents.
“The city of Lanark needs water infrastructure really bad,” Sorensen said. “The former Mayor Ken Viglietta reached out to my office and says ‘Can you help?’”
The Carroll County city has experienced a number of breaks and incidents of low-pressure. Lanark’s current Mayor Mark Macomber says the funding will help any future growth for the area, and the town is starting to plan how to use the money to fix its water mains.
“We’re probably going to be looking in the next 24 months to putting shovels in the ground and actually seeing water main replacement,” Macomber said.
Other projects secured with the $123 million investment include resources for the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, bridge replacement in Rockford and clean drinking water infrastructure in Freeport.
