Live: M4 closed in Bristol amid infrastructure defect


The M4 in Bristol has been closed following reports there is debris on the road. According to traffic monitor Inrix, traffic has been held in the eastbound direction between J21 and J20 at the Almondsbury Interchange.

Motorists were reportedly stopped as of around 8.15am today (January 26). National Highways has said there is an ‘infrastructure defect’ on the motorway.




Inrix reports: “All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to debris on road on M4 Eastbound from J21 M48 to J20 M5 J15 (Almondsbury Interchange). Traffic has been held since around 08.15.”

Fallen electrical cable

The M4 in Bristol has been closed amid reports of a fallen electrical cable on the motorway.

“M4 Eastbound closed, delays due to electrical cable on road at J20 M5 J15 (Almondsbury Interchange). The road has been closed whilst a fallen electrical cable is cleared from the road.”

Diversion – via the M5 to J16 (Almondsbury Roundabout), then exit back onto the M4.

A Highways England spokesperson said:

The #M4 eastbound is closed within J20 #Almondsbury due to an infrastructure defect. Road users are advised to join the #M5 north or south and turn at J14 or J16 then return on the opposite carriageway to rejoin the #M4 eastbound on the #M5 at J15.Thanks for your patience.
