Mit: MIT celebrates 75th anniversary with TN allocating ₹75cr for infrastructure development | Chennai News


Chennai: Alumni from around the world and professors shared stories of their college days, took photos and strolled around the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) campus in Chromepet on the institution’s 75th anniversary on Saturday. During the valediction ceremony, TN minister of higher education K Ponmudy interacted with alumni and students. “MIT has grown from its modest beginnings to a premier institution known for its cutting-edge programmes, interdisciplinary research, and strong industry-academia collaborations. We should focus on empowering women to pursue higher education,” he said.The institute, which opened on July 18, 1949, with 96 students, now has more than 4,000 students enrolled in nine undergraduate and 15 postgraduate programmes. “We planted 75 saplings and held an open house exhibition as part of the July 18 celebration,” said K Ravichandran, dean of MIT.The state govt has allocated 75 crore for the construction of an auditorium and classroom complex on the MIT campus, and the construction is now in progress. Additionally, alumni have also contributed to enhancing the campus learning environment.President of the MIT Alumni Association B Senthilnathan announced that a proposal has been submitted to Anna University to renovate the alumni house into a training centre for students. New automation labs, built at a cost of 35 lakh, will benefit students of the new academic year. “We have also allocated 18 lakh for year-round college activities and donated 8 lakh for scholarships,” he added.Earlier, Anna University vice-chancellor R Velraj emphasised the importance of encouraging women to pursue higher education.
