PELHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Several infrastructure projects in Pelham are underway to help improve the quality of life for residents.
Those projects include road repaving, traffic cameras and safety measures for pedestrians.
City leaders said according to their citizen survey, better infrastructure was something residents requested including improvements to roadways, traffic and safety.
The city noticed certain intersections had old technology in the ground that detects vehicles and triggers the traffic light signal.
Instead of replacing that technology, they decided to mount cameras on top of the signal poles that will detect vehicles and help improve traffic flow.
The city budgeted for 2024 about 12 intersections each costing about $500,000 to replace.
So far, the city has finished installing cameras at two intersections and plans to replace all the loop detection technology in the next two years.
In addition to that project, the mayor and city council decided to double their budgeted amount for resurfacing road projects to $1.25 million to allow them to repave more streets with construction starting in May.
City leaders said they want to ensure that they provide citizens with proper infrastructure and facilities for them to enjoy.
Andre Bittas, director of development services and public works said, “It’s important to promote the city as a city that is proactive, takes care of its infrastructure, and also listen to its citizens about their needs.”
In addition to those projects, this week the city started on the second phase of their watermain replacement project as well as striping for new crosswalks making it safe for pedestrians to cross from the amphitheater over to the canopy.
