Work commences on 7,500m2 transmission infrastructure in Dundee vital to net zero drive

HIGHLANDS-based Global Infrastructure (Scotland) Ltd. has broken ground at Claverhouse East Industrial Estate, Dundee on a new multimillion pound strategic storage facility for SSEN Transmission. The 7,500m2 facility – and an identical unit under construction in the north at Inverness Airport Business Park (IABP) – will play a critical role in the continued expansion and maintenance of Scotland’s electricity network.

The facilities being constructed by Global Infrastructure – a leading civil engineering contractor to the Energy & Renewables, Utilities, Infrastructure and Transportation sectors – will be completed in Q1, 2025 and will incorporate heavy lifting facilities, bunded areas for oil filled plant, bespoke storage areas, office and welfare areas for staff and the latest Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points and photovoltaics (PV) installations.

Last year Global Infrastructure was awarded the multi-million-pound contract to design and deliver the two buildings, with work at the Inverness site commencing first, in August 2023.

Speaking about the major project milestone for the Dundee site, Global Infrastructure Managing Director, David MacDonald, said:

“We are delighted to commence work in Dundee on what will be a vital building stage in the future build out and maintenance of the electricity network as part of the Government’s drive to net zero. Steelwork for the Inverness building is well advanced and groundworks in Dundee will commence imminently in line with our schedule to deliver both units early next year.”

John Baillie, Project Manager at SSEN Transmission said:

“The new Operations warehouse in Claverhouse in Dundee is an exciting new development for us, allowing the space for state-of-the-art facilities which we can use to effectively maintain and manage our high-voltage electricity transmission network.

“We’re delighted to be working once again with Global Infrastructure to deliver this new warehouse project for us.  Already Global has made fantastic progress on our new warehouse development in Inverness Airport and Business Park, and we look forward to seeing the new site at Claverhouse take shape.

“These new warehouse developments in both Dundee and Inverness are part of a huge period of growth for SSEN Transmission across the north of Scotland, which will help us as we work to reinforce and build an electricity transmission network which will deliver a network for net zero.”

Global Infrastructure has a successful track record in delivering projects in the energy and renewables sector, including substation builds and upgrades, structural steelwork, and specialist concrete construction. As a framework contractor for Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE), the company has completed an array of projects, including dam, tunnel, and aqueduct maintenance; refurbishment of intakes; construction of substation buildings; and base construction for 132 kV and 275 kV facilities.
