A ‘two-bedroom’ historic Grade II listed building in Montpelier will be auctioned off next month. And it’s got a with a modest guide price.
The property on Picton Street will go under the hammer on May 15 for £325,000 and will be ready for its new owners to move into straight away. The property itself dates back to around 1830 and is known as The Old Gaol or the Charley Box.
Across the years, it’s been as everything from a place to hold people arrested overnight before the establishment of the police force in Bristol, to a hairdressing salon, studio and a cafe in more recent years.
Inside, the property is set across two levels. On the upper level, there’s an open-plan living space looking out across the garden. On the ground floor there is a kitchen set underneath a curved ceiling, a bathroom with shower and a small area that could be big enough for a bed.

The lower floor features a large room, advertised as being the main bedroom. The garden is set a little back and is accessed by an alley and steps that lead you into a secluded private garden, which gets plenty of sun during the day.
Andrew Morgan, auctioneer at Hollis & Morgan, which is marketing the property, said: “The purchaser of this historic Grade II listed Old Goal will certainly look forward to a long period in occupation because not only will their tenure be “Freehold and Free” but they will also acquire a unique-beautifully modernised property of tremendous character in one of the most interesting and cosmopolitan areas of the city.”
“With flexible accommodation over two floors and a delightful landscaped garden, if the new owner does wish to escape they will have access to the artistic culture of this vibrant area and the choice of excellent restaurants.”
