The BBC’s luxury property reality show, Crazy Rich Agents, has been cancelled after just one series.
Crazy Rich Agents, the BBC’s luxury property reality show, has reportedly been cancelled after just one series.
The show, which aired on 6 August 2023, offered a glimpse into the high-stakes world of real estate, featuring estate agents competing for a coveted position at Nest Seekers’ New York office. It quickly drew comparisons to Netflix’s hit Selling Sunset, thanks to its focus on luxurious properties, dramatic interactions between agents, and their career ambitions.
Much like Selling Sunset, the agents showcased stunning properties, ranging from penthouses to sprawling estates, while navigating personal and professional tensions within their team.
Despite the initial buzz, Crazy Rich Agents, based in London, reportedly failed to secure a second season, with its run ending just over a year after it premiered. The Mirror has reached out to the BBC for comment.
Fans, who had enjoyed the show’s portrayal of the luxury real estate market and the engaging personalities of the agents, were left disappointed by its sudden end.
Daniel McPeake, one of the key agents on Crazy Rich Agents, expressed frustration over the constant comparisons to Selling Sunset. He made it clear that while both shows revolve around luxury real estate, Crazy Rich Agents had its own unique approach and shouldn’t be seen merely as a UK version of the Netflix hit.
Daniel told The Sun: “Selling Sunset has a whiff of b******t – it’s a reality show with fantastic, beautiful people in mini-skirts showing penthouses. But there’s nothing underneath the bonnet, nothing to show people how to do it or what’s going on in real estate – it’s a complete farce. That’s not the show we wanted to make. This is not LA, this is London. It’s cold, it’s rainy and you’ve got to get the Tube. They may be talking about million-pound homes but then go back to sleep on their sister’s sofa – that is the actual reality.”
Back in 2022, The BBC had been battling for attention from streaming sites since Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV and more started vying for attention from viewers. Selling Sunset had been a runaway success since it started streaming on Netflix back in 2019 – with cameras showing off incredible multi-million pound properties in Los Angeles as well as the drama in the lives of the estate agents who are trying to sell them.
A source previously told the publication: “This bonkers doc follows the lives of hot, young agents in the UK luxury property market who are cutting their teeth in the trade. There is a real vibe of ‘fake it ’til you make it’ and a lot of bravado flying around.”
