PULLMAN – The Washington State University (WSU) Police Department has initiated an investigation into reports of fraudulent real estate listings circulating on Facebook Marketplace. These listings, primarily advertising rental units in Pullman, have been utilized by scammers who communicate with potential victims via text message.
According to reports, the scammers provide victims with falsified rental applications and request a refundable application fee amounting to $60.00. Victims are then directed to remit the $60.00 application fee via CashApp. However, upon completion of the CashApp transaction, the scammers fail to reimburse the money, leaving victims to realize they have fallen victim to a scam.
This fraudulent activity underscores a concerning trend where scammers exploit social media platforms to deceive unsuspecting individuals seeking rental properties. Often utilizing fabricated images or stolen photos from legitimate listings, these scammers coerce upfront payments under the guise of property viewings or deposits. In reality, these transactions serve as a means for the scammers to unlawfully obtain cash without providing any legitimate rental services.
The WSU Police Department advises exercising caution when encountering rental listings that require upfront cash payments or application fees. Prospective renters are urged to verify the authenticity of property listings and the identity of the property owner before engaging in any financial transactions. Face-to-face interactions are strongly recommended to confirm property ownership and ensure dealings are conducted with legitimate real estate entities.
Individuals who believe they have been victimized by real estate scams on Facebook Marketplace are encouraged to promptly contact the WSU Police Department.
