Woman horrified as Airbnb host demands guests do chores before leaving property

An Airbnb customer has hit out at her host after being asked to complete a long list of tasks while looking to book a stay at a property. Despite this, the potential holidaymaker was still set to be asked to shell out for a hefty cleaning fee if they booked.

When staying at an Airbnb or other short term holiday let, it’s not unusual to have to abide by some house rules. But a TikToker called Mel, was shocked by what she was asked to do when looking to book a few nights away in February.

She said: “Where do Airbnb owners get the audacity? So I’m just doing some research for a little mini vacation my husband and I wanna take at the end of February.

“Found this place that I liked that’s within our price range. It does have a $125 (£100) cleaning fee, as most Airbnbs do. And I don’t have a problem with that, but this is what I do have a problem with.”

What Mel did have a problem with, is the extensive list of tasks which guests are expected to complete. The list reads: “We ask that guests complete a few checkout duties before departing to allow time to prepare the house safely and on time. Removing garbage, removing bed linens, starting the dishwasher and one load of laundry.”

Mel went on to add: “Now, maybe this is like entitlement or privilege talking, however, if I’m paying $229 a night to stay somewhere, plus $125 cleaning fee, I’m not doing any f******g laundry. Full stop. I know it’s one load of laundry, it’ll take me two minutes to do, but it’s the principle that bothers me.”

The Mirror went on to add that Mel is far from the only person to be irked by these types of demands. People have previously been told to washing bed sheets and even mow the lawn at the end of their stays.

In response to Mel’s TikTok, users had their say in the comments. Orange Girl said: “Please just stop patroning Airbnb ppl …. It just contributes to gentrification. Stay at hotels, support ppl in the area, eat local.”
