Hallmark certifications continue to remain one of the strongest indicators of purity and quality standards within the premium silver jewellery segment. Saajan Singh, Founder of Naunidh Jewels, also emphasises that verifying hallmark certifications should be the very first step for consumers evaluating authenticity.
But beyond certifications, silver itself tells a story over time. Unlike imitation jewellery that often chips, fades unevenly, or exposes another metal underneath, authentic sterling silver naturally oxidises and may develop a slight tarnish with wear. Experts say this is not a flaw, but rather a characteristic of real silver. “Authentic silver may naturally develop slight tarnish over time, which can be easily restored,” explains Singh. “Plated jewellery, on the other hand, often peels or reveals a base metal beneath the surface.”
Craftsmanship, too, remains a major giveaway. According to Khandelwal, genuine silver jewellery generally feels more substantial, refined, and thoughtfully finished than counterfeit alternatives that may appear hollow or overly lightweight. Details such as smooth finishing, secure stone settings, and consistency in plating quality often reflect the difference between authentic craftsmanship and imitation manufacturing.
There are also simpler at-home ways to assess authenticity. Since silver is non-magnetic, a basic magnet test can sometimes help identify fake pieces. “Real silver typically has a noticeable density and refined finish,” says Singh, adding that counterfeit jewellery often lacks both weight and durability.
Increasingly, consumers are becoming more informed about what they purchase, particularly within the premium silver category, where longevity, transparency, and everyday wearability matter just as much as aesthetics.
