COPENHAGEN, New York (WWNY) – Photos obtained by 7News show two Copenhagen fire trucks on private property, with one truck next to a portable water container with a hose running into it from the truck.
A court order forbids the trucks from being taken from the fire station.
The July 2023 order reads that the Copenhagen Volunteer Fire Department trucks must stay in the firehouse and should only be used for routine or preventative maintenance. The document says that if the trucks are taken out for those purposes, the village must be notified.
The village voted to disband the fire department in 2022, and a battle has continued between the village and the fire department over who owns the firefighting equipment.
Copenhagen Mayor Mark Souva said the village notes each time a truck is taken out, and how it violates the court order. He declined to comment further due to ongoing legal matters. The village’s lawyer also declined to comment.
The village filed a police report with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, and it’s not the first report filed. The Sheriff calls it a civil case, not a criminal one.
The Copenhagen Volunteer Fire Department didn’t return calls.
