A $US20m ($A28.1m) mansion bought by Camp Rock star Nick Jonas became the subject of a lawsuit over alleged water damage and mould.

The extraordinary property saga is back in focus after Camp Rock 3 reunited Jonas with brothers Joe and Kevin and original co-star Demi Lovato.

The sequel premiered on Disney Channel on August 13 and landed on Disney+ a day later, with Lovato reprising Mitchie Torres in a cameo and serving as an executive producer.

But away from Camp Rock, its four best-known stars have taken remarkably different paths through property, spanning multimillion-dollar sales, a civil dispute, luxury home building and some of Hollywood’s wildest interiors.

NICK JONAS

Nick Jonas and wife Priyanka Chopra bought their sprawling Encino home in Los Angeles for about $A28.1m in 2019.

The roughly 1858sq m mansion has seven bedrooms and 11 bathrooms, with the $US20m deal setting a price record for Encino at the time.

Its features include a two-lane bowling alley, indoor basketball court, cinema, gym, games room and infinity pool overlooking the surrounding hills.

But several years after the purchase, the property became the subject of a civil dispute.

Page Six reported from a copy of a civil complaint filed in May 2023 that a trustee for the trust that purchased the home alleged problems with waterproofing around its pool and spa had contributed to mould contamination and other issues.

The complaint also alleged a water leak near a barbecue area had damaged part of the home’s interior and described the property as having become “virtually unlivable”.

Jonas, Chopra and their daughter temporarily lived elsewhere while work was carried out at the property, according to reports at the time.

The episode provided an extraordinary contrast to the resort-like mansion that had made headlines for its price and scale only a few years earlier.

Jonas had enjoyed a smoother exit from his previous Los Angeles home.

He paid about $A9.1m for a Beverly Hills Post Office residence in 2018 before selling it for about $A9.7m the following year.

The buyer was tennis superstar Naomi Osaka.

JOE JONAS

Joe Jonas has been considerably more active in property, buying and selling homes across Los Angeles, Miami and New York.

His latest move came in June, when he listed his three-bedroom apartment inside Brooklyn’s Olympia Dumbo building for about $A9.5m.

He had paid about $A9.1m for the 26th-floor residence in May 2024.

That leaves a gap of only about $A350,000 between the reported purchase price and current asking price before any ownership or selling costs are considered.

Joe Jonas and former wife Sophie Turner bought this Miami waterfront home for about $A15.5m before selling it for about $A21.1m in 2023.

The six-bedroom Miami mansion included private water frontage and a dock, with the couple initially seeking about $A23.9m before its sale.

The roughly 247sq m residence has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Manhattan Bridge, custom white-oak finishes and a red, speak-easy-inspired listening room.

It follows several substantially bigger property moves made with former wife Sophie Turner.

The pair paid about $A15.5m for a waterfront home at Miami’s Bay Point in 2021 before selling it for about $A21.1m in August 2023.

That represents a nominal price increase of about $A5.6m before renovation, transaction, tax and holding costs.

They had originally sought about $A23.9m for the six-bedroom waterfront property, which included private water frontage and a dock.

The sale occurred in August 2023. Jonas filed for divorce the following month.

New York produced a less favourable result.

A Nolita apartment bought for about $A7.9m in 2018 spent years on and off the market after first being listed for the equivalent of about $A9.1m in 2020.

It finally changed hands for about $A7.5m in 2024, approximately $A340,000 below its original purchase price before selling or ownership costs were taken into account.

KEVIN JONAS

Kevin Jonas took perhaps the most unexpected property path of the three brothers.

Rather than simply buying expensive homes, he moved into the business of building them.

Jonas became involved in New Jersey home construction through JonasWerner Fine Custom Homes, which built luxury residences including homes occupied by Jonas and his family.

One was a roughly 642sq m Hamptons-inspired Colonial in Montville that JonasWerner built on more than two acres.

The five-bedroom home included 6.5 bathrooms, a glass-enclosed wine display, gym, saltwater pool and waterfall.

Jonas sold it for about $A3.2m in 2018 after it had initially been marketed for almost $A3.5m.

An earlier Boonton property built by JonasWerner contained a 1500-bottle wine cellar, cigar lounge, saltwater pool and putting green.

It is a striking career detour for someone millions of viewers first knew playing guitarist Jason Gray in Camp Rock.

DEMI LOVATO

Demi Lovato’s Los Angeles homes tell another very different property story.

Lovato bought a contemporary Hollywood Hills estate for about $A11.7m in 2016.

The three-storey property above Chateau Marmont included panoramic views, a zero-edge pool and rooftop entertaining areas.

Lovato was hospitalised following a drug overdose reportedly suffered at the property in July 2018.

The house was subsequently marketed for about $A13.3m before the asking price was reduced.

It eventually sold for about $A11.6m in 2020, roughly $A70,000 below the original purchase price before transaction and ownership costs were considered.

Demi Lovato paid about $A9.8m for this newly built Studio City farmhouse in 2020, months after selling the Hollywood Hills property.

Lovato transformed the Studio City home with maximalist interiors, including a rainbow sofa, psychedelic ceiling and pool house converted into a recording studio.

Less than three months later, Lovato bought a newly built modern farmhouse in Studio City for about $A9.8m.

The roughly 790sq m residence had six bedrooms, a theatre, gym, swimming pool and extensive entertainment spaces.

What Lovato subsequently did with the house was arguably more remarkable than the transaction itself.

Working with Argyle Design, the singer shifted away from the restrained interiors associated with many celebrity mansions and created a colourful, maximalist home filled with work by emerging artists from under-represented communities.

A pool house became a recording studio, while another room featured a rainbow modular sofa, shimmering walls and an interactive cloud beneath a psychedelic mural ceiling.

Lovato told Architectural Digest the intention was to create “a very queer environment”, with the finished property designed to reflect the singer more personally.

Camp Rock (movie premiere: Saturday, November 29, 2008: 6.30pm on Seven):
This new music-filled movie features the hot new group the Jonas Brothers. More than anything, Mitchie Torres wants to spend her summer at a prestigious rock camp, but can only attend if she works in the kitchen as one of the cooks. Upon arriving at camp, Mitchie discovers the competition among the campers is tough: both in the classroom, and for the attention of Shane Gray - a teen pop star, and this summer's celebrity teacher. When Shane overhears Mitchie singing from behind closed doors, he sets out to find the girl with the beautiful voice. But first Mitchie must confront her fears, step out of the kitchen and into the spotlight. Starring Demi Lovato, Joe Jonas, Meaghan Jette Martin, Kevin Jonas, Nick Jonas, Maria Canals-Barrera, Alyson Stoner, Julie Brown, Daniel Fathers, Aanna Maria Perez De Tagle, Jasmine Richards, Jordan Francis and Roshon Fegan.

It is a long way from the summer camp where Australian audiences first encountered the group.

One Jonas brother went into home building.

Another has again tested New York’s luxury market.

And Nick Jonas bought one of Encino’s most expensive homes only for the property to later become the subject of allegations over mould and construction defects.

Eighteen years after Camp Rock helped make them household names, the cast’s property lives have produced almost as much drama as their careers.
