The latest update for Marvel Snap finally brought many fan-requested features to the game, such as a card graveyard and customizable card borders. These new additions follow the 2024 roadmap for Marvel Snap put forth by developer Second Dinner at the start of the year, signaling that the hit mobile card game is not slowing down anytime soon. Included along with these additions was a new type of premium feature, the Gold Pass, as a way for Marvel Snap players to earn more Gold, but there are some drawbacks players who purchase it will want to watch out for.
Marvel Snap has always included a monthly Season Pass as one of its primary methods of monetization, offering players new cards, cosmetics, and in-game currency at a premium price. The current Avengers vs. X-Men season of Marvel Snap has made some welcome changes to the Season Pass, such as the first instance of the game offering players a new emote exclusively for those who paid for the Premium Season Pass. However, players now have the option to purchase an additional pass in the form of the Gold Pass, further highlighting Marvel Snap‘s monetization efforts.
Marvel Snap 2024 Development Roadmap Explained
It seems like Marvel Snap has a big year in store for fans in 2024, as the roadmap of content released by Second Dinner has some exciting additions.
Marvel Snap’s Gold Pass is a Great Deal For Players, But Has a Catch
In addition to Marvel Snap‘s Season Pass, which costs $10, players can now pay an additional $5 to access the Gold Pass. This pass gives players 300 Gold upfront, with 50 Gold daily over the course of 30 days for a total of 1800 Gold. In terms of value, this is a great deal since players would normally have to pay between $10 and $20 for that amount of Gold, with the downside being that players will have to wait 30 days to accumulate all of this Gold, potentially missing out on a variant or bundle they were planning on spending the Gold on.
Gold is an important currency in Marvel Snap, giving players the ability to purchase cosmetics like variants and bundles from the in-game shop. While there are ways to get Gold without having to spend any real money, such as by completing weekly challenges, players are encouraged to buy Gold in order to unlock the cosmetics they want. Although some Gold can be earned through the Season Pass, the addition of the Gold Pass gives players another opportunity to stock up on Gold while waiting for the variant they’ve been waiting for to appear in the Daily Offerings.
Marvel Snap Payers Can Lose Out on Gold They Paid for by Not Logging In
Having to wait 30 days to collect the full amount of the Gold Pass is a bit of a drawback for those interested in purchasing it, but there is an even bigger hindrance that players will need to be aware of. In order to earn all 1800 Gold from the Gold Pass, players will need to log into Marvel Snap daily and claim their 50 Gold for the day. Any missed days mean that the Gold for that day is lost and can’t be claimed, potentially meaning players can end up losing some of the Gold they already paid for if they’re not careful about keeping track of their daily log-ins.
With the amount of Gold the Gold Pass gives players for the price, it might seem like a tempting way to get additional currency and snag a few more variants. However, this monetization model can be a slippery slope towards more aggressive monetization practices in the future. Marvel Snap already offers daily rewards for logging in, like 50 free Credits, so locking the Gold the player has paid for behind a daily login requirement feels like the game is doubling down on trying to tie player retention to premium currency access.
