Carole Dods and Doug Graham’s Arapaho Gold (Bayside Boy) was unbeaten after two wins at Thirsk and found plenty under a late drive to become the first black-type winner for his freshman sire (by New Bay) in Friday’s Listed Apple Print & Creative Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury.
“He’s done it well today to be honest as he got knocked sideways early on and, thankfully, Connor [Beasley] got him relaxed a bit, but he’s done it the hard way,” said trainer Michael Dods. “He’s always looked a nice horse and the plan had been to go to Beverley, hope that he would be competitive or win, and then go for the [Listed] Windsor Castle [at Royal Ascot]. He was withdrawn at Beverley, so that was that, and I had to have a re-plan and give him a bit of time. He’s entered in the [Aug. 21 G2] Gimcrack [at York] and that is where I expect we’ll be going. It’s great that Doug Graham retires one horse [Dakota Gold] and has another good one there. I’m delighted for the owners, Connor and the whole team.”
The €42,000 Goffs Orby Book 2 yearling attempted to find a midfield position after breaking on the wing, but was lit up when receiving a hefty bump and raced in a close third once returning on an even keel.
Under attempted restraint through halfway, the 4-1 chance was scrubbed along passing the quarter-mile pole and refused to buckle once gaining an edge at the furlong marker to repel the late threat of Nabati (Night Of Thunder) by a neck for a career high. Richard Hughes trainee Agamemnon (Mehmas) fared best of the remainder and finished 1 3/4 lengths adrift in third.
Arapaho Gold, half-brother to a yearling filly by Coulsty, is the third of four foals and one of two scorers produced by a winning full-sister to Listed Jagersro Sprint third Lost My Sock (Bungle Inthejungle).
His dam Call Of The Jungle (Bungle Inthejungle), who hails from the family of sires Zafonic and Zamindar, is also kin to Listed Gillies Fillies’ Stakes victrix Company Asset (Fast Company) and to the dam of stakes-winning G3 Mercury Stakes third Funny Money Honey (Bungle Inthejungle).
