She may have been in the red uniform, but Robyn Grant was boxing out of the silver corner at the Canada Cup.
The Quesnel athlete has recently moved to Manitoba, and it was with that province’s contingent that she was at the inaugural Canada Cup event. It replaces the pre-pandemic Golden Gloves tournament, and it’s a combination of national championships for youth and Boxing Canada top tournament for open-elite categories for experienced boxers like Grant with 10 or more fights.
This first time was held in Calgary.
It was an “awesome tournament to be a part of” she told The Observer. She earned her spot into the gold medal bout in the 57 kg division versus Kerowna Hamilton of Alberta.
Grant said it was a “very close match for the gold, I lost in a split decision,” to bring home the silver. “My coaches and others thought I had the first and definitely the last round, great fight, I’ll for sure see Kerowna in the ring again.”
Grant now trains at the Pan Am Boxing Club in Winnipeg, but her prior career was centred from 2 Rivers Boxing Club in Quesnel under coach Wally Doern. She dedicates her athletic accomplishments to her Haida Nation, always wearing the Haida flag to the boxing ring.
