NUGT and AGQ Jump Big as Gold and Silver Rally

Leveraged precious-metals ETFs are the standouts on Wall Street this session, with the Direxion Daily Gold Miners Bull 2X Shares (NYSEARCA:NUGT) surging 14.46% and the ProShares Ultra Silver (NYSEARCA:AGQ) climbing 9.39% as both gold and silver spot prices rally, both up between 4% and 5%. The SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEARCA:GLD) is up 4.3% on the session, and traders are attributing the metals bid to a softer US dollar, easing Treasury yields, and market expectations around cooling inflation and geopolitical de-escalation. Those are the catalysts being cited on desks rather than any single confirmed event.

Context matters here. Despite today’s pop, both leveraged products remain deeply negative for the year. NUGT is still down 33.25% year to date, AGQ is down 56.47%, and even GLD itself is off 5.59% YTD. Today is a sharp bounce inside a choppy market for the metals complex.

Direxion Daily Gold Miners Bull 2X Shares (NUGT)

NUGT is a complex, higher-fee leveraged product that targets 2x the daily performance of a gold-miners index. It is designed as a short-term tactical trading tool that uses swaps and derivatives to generate that leverage.

The mechanism explains today’s move. Gold miners are already operationally leveraged to bullion because most of their cost base is fixed, so a rally in the metal expands margins disproportionately. NUGT then applies a 2x daily multiplier on top. That is why a 4.3% pop in GLD is showing up as a 14.46% move in NUGT.

And of course, the mechanism cuts both ways. Because the fund resets its 2x exposure every session, compounding and volatility decay cause its trailing returns to diverge sharply from twice the underlying’s return over any multi-day window. GLD is up 20.34% over the past year; a static 2x of that would be roughly 40%. NUGT’s actual one-year return is 50.46%, and its ten-year return is -78.95%. That gap is decay at work.

ProShares Ultra Silver (AGQ)

AGQ is the silver-market counterpart: a 2x daily leveraged product linked to silver, structured through swaps rather than physical bullion. Same compliance points apply. It is a complex leveraged tool designed for short-term positioning, and it resets each session.

Silver rallied alongside gold today, and AGQ amplifies moves in the metal, which is why it is posting a 9.39% session gain.

Decay is even more visible here. Silver spot is up 58.45% over one year; AGQ, despite its 2x daily mandate, is up only 34.47% over the same window. That is the compounding drag that silver’s higher realized volatility inflicts on a daily-reset product.

Underlying Miner Context

Kinross Gold (NYSE:KGC | KGC Price Prediction) recently posted Q2 2026 EPS of $0.71 versus a $0.66 estimate, on revenue of $2.24 billion (up 29.5% year over year) at an average realized gold price of $4,483/oz, up 37%. CEO J. Paul Rollinson framed the setup this way: “Kinross delivered another excellent quarter. We generated record free cash flow of approximately $840 million… Strong operational performance and disciplined cost management drove record margins that continue to outpace the rise in the gold price.” Market cap sits at $28.00 billion, with shares up 37.48% over the past year.

The Structural Takeaway

Today is a clean illustration of how leveraged commodity ETFs work. A 4.3% spot-gold move became a low-double-digit move in miner shares and a mid-teens move in NUGT. Silver’s session gain pushed AGQ nearly into double digits. Same catalyst, different payoffs, all mechanically tied to the daily-reset 2x mandate. With the CBOE Volatility Index at 16.50, the bid reflects metals-specific catalysts, and traders can use NUGT and AGQ as short-term expressions of a metals view given the daily-reset mechanics. But of course, it’s important to remember that NUGT is still down 33.25% and AGQ down 56.47% in 2026 even after today’s bounce.
