Sophie Thomas wins World Athletics U20 Championship silver

The 18-year-old ran to glory at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships, in which she was competing for Great Britain, in the mixed 4×100 metre relay event.

She was one of 49 athletes that were selected for the squad that travelled to Oregon, United States.

Sophie was included in the first batch of 36 picks made after the England Athletics Under-20s Championships, which hosted world trials at the beginning of July, and competed in both the relay and individual 200m disciplines.

The talented teenager, who is preparing to begin a sports scholarship at the University of Connecticut, headed into the competition in impressive form.

In June, at the Mannheim International Gala in Germany, former Dollar Academy pupil Sophie set a European under-20-leading time, of 23.22 seconds, in the 200m guest race, and, together with Holly Whittaker, Emma Clark, and Cara Monachello, set a senior Scottish women’s 4x100m record.

She then headed for Birmingham, for the Novuna UK Athletics Championships, in which she twice broke her own Scottish under-20 age group record in the 200m, and also set a new national outdoor best in that category over 100m.

On day two of the World Championships, which ran from last Wednesday until Sunday, Sophie lined up with Divine Iheme, Savannah Morgan-McKenzie, and Matthew Ajayi, in the heats for the mixed relay.

Not only did the GB and Northern Ireland quartet win their race to progress to the final, but they did so in world record-breaking style.

A sublime performance saw them cross the line in a time of 41.60 seconds, a new global age group best, smashing the mark that has been set by Australia (41.64) just minutes earlier in the opening heat.

The final took place on Saturday and, once more, Sophie and her team-mates delivered an exceptional effort on the track.

Running an even quicker time, of 41.38, they reached the podium by finishing as runners-up to Italy, who won gold in 41.21, breaking the GB team’s world record, with the United States taking bronze.

“We have practiced a lot, so it was really all about being able to execute at our best level and thankfully, we did,” Sophie said.

In between her relay heat and final, the talented teenager competed in the 200m, in which she reached the semi-finals.

Having won her heat, in a time of 23.53, Sophie placed fifth in the next round, crossing the line having ran 0.01 seconds quicker.

Speaking to Press Sport ahead of her most recent competitions, Sophie said: “It all just came into place.

“Some people said that, the stronger you get, the speed just comes with it, and I feel like that’s definitely the case for me.

“I’ve really enjoyed training. A big part of running is enjoying the process, and I think that’s definitely been a big thing for me, just learning to enjoy training, and learning to enjoy the pain part of it as well!”
