Deloitte Report Reveals CFOs’ Biggest Challenge in Adopting AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly seen as an important technology for corporate finance functions. However, its adoption among Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) in Southeast Asia is still relatively limited due to a number of obstacles.

Based on the Deloitte Asia Pacific CFO Pulse Survey, as many as 46 percent of CFOs are currently only utilizing AI in certain areas of the finance function. Meanwhile, only 12 percent have implemented it widely in their organizations.

AI is considered to help automate routine work so that the finance team has more time to focus on strategic decision-making. However, there are a number of obstacles that still hinder this transformation.

The report shows that 53 percent of CFOs admit that the need for costs and resources is the main challenge, followed by a talent and skills gap of 50 percent, and data quality issues reaching 43 percent.

To overcome this problem, 78 percent of CFOs admitted to investing in workforce upskilling programs.

CFO Program Leader Deloitte Indonesia, Liana Lim, said the adoption of AI needs to go hand in hand with the development of human resources and careful succession planning.

According to him, the biggest opportunity for AI for CFOs is not only to increase operational efficiency, but also to provide space for financial leaders to focus more on strategic decisions that directly impact business resilience.

“Adopting AI without a strong succession plan is like automating a ship without a captain to control it. The biggest opportunity is not just efficiency, but using AI to free up time for critical decision-making while strengthening the readiness of successor talent,” Liana said in the report.

Deloitte assesses that the combination of AI utilization, skill improvement, and strong governance will be an important factor in maintaining corporate resilience in the midst of changing business dynamics.
