According to Kitco, the latest Commitments of Traders report, identified as Report 40, shows notable positioning changes across two platinum-group metals, with an extreme reading in the euro adding broader context for commodity traders. The report examines futures and options combined data and net positions using the classic COT format.
Platinum recorded a 26 percent change in Commercials net positions for the week, a reading described as clearly larger than average. While comparable changes have appeared on the chart before, the current reading is characterized as directionally meaningful, particularly alongside ICOT scores that support rising prices. On a five-year view, the stress picture is more measured: positioning leans bullish on a one-year to eighteen-month horizon but has not reached historically extreme levels that would constitute a standout long-term contrarian signal. The report places more weight on the change signal and ICOT scores than on the broader positioning extreme, and describes the near-term picture for platinum as supportive heading into early next week.
Palladium’s weekly change came in at 20 percent, a shift visible on the chart and supported by ICOT scores. On the five-year chart, palladium sits at a bullish COT extreme. The report notes rising positioning stress following a bearish COT extreme in early 2026, which had offered a defensive signal for market participants holding long positions. The situation has since reversed, with positioning suggesting a potential bottom could be forming. The report cautions that a bullish COT extreme does not automatically mean the market turns immediately; the extreme could widen further before price responds, and continued downside pressure in the short run would not be surprising. Elevated ICOT scores may simply reflect a trend that is not finished. The larger-than-average change signal suggests potential for a near-term bounce rather than a confirmed reversal.
For commodity traders, currency positioning matters. The report views a potential euro recovery against the dollar as relevant context when assessing dollar-denominated metals, though it does not confirm a bullish metals outlook. Large Speculators in the euro have reached a 343-report extreme, while Commercials have reached a 510-report extreme. These readings represent some of the most stretched positioning levels in many years for those groups. The data suggests the euro could be approaching a meaningful bottom against the dollar, though the exact timing remains uncertain. The report’s interpretation is that the euro is likely to find its floor sometime in the months ahead, potentially extending into early next year if the COT extreme continues to widen before resolving. A widening extreme would, in that view, make the eventual long setup more compelling rather than less, representing greater positioning stress, though price confirmation would still be needed. The report also notes a nearby level, a former resistance zone that has since been breached, that could act as support now, and says COT analysis works best when paired with price structure.
None of this amounts to confirmation of a reversal. Palladium’s downtrend may not be finished, the euro’s bottom may still be weeks or months away, and platinum’s change signal still needs price to follow through. The COT data currently flags these three markets as deserving close attention in the sessions ahead.
