Menlo Park, CA–Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry, a family-operated Silicon Valley house known for rare colored gemstones, high jewelry and independent watches, marked 45 years in the Bay Area with a celebration on October 9.

The anniversary gathering was photographed by Drew Altizer Photography, whose online gallery from the event identifies 94 people. Founder Stephen Silver and his son Jared Silver, the company’s president, are among the names listed.

The business traces its start to S.H. Silver Company, which Stephen H. Silver, a graduate gemologist trained at the Gemological Institute of America, set up in Menlo Park. According to the company’s website, it first operated as a wholesale firm handling antiques, precious stones and appraisals for clients such as law firms, courts and estates. Custom design, restoration work and a Stephen Silver line of high jewelry followed.

The jeweler’s first shop opened inside the Rosewood Sand Hill Hotel in a space of roughly 100 square feet originally meant as the hotel’s coat closet. Jared Silver later proposed a larger showroom that added fine watches, and the company became known for its selection of independent Swiss watchmakers.

Today the firm is headquartered at The Villa Menlo Park, a three-story, 35,000-square-foot complex whose development Jared Silver guided, the company says. It includes seven mono-brand watch and jewelry boutiques, dining from Michelin-recognized chefs and a ground-floor Stephen Silver flagship.

Stephen Silver is also known for giving the Cullinan Blue Diamond Necklace to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.
