EU Deploys Dedicated Crypto Task Force to Block Russian Evasion

The sanctions office will strengthen coordination between member states to deliver a more effective application of these restrictive measures, bringing together several aspects of the sanctions lifecycle, including policy design, implementation, enforcement support and anti-circumvention.

Specifically, the office seeks to close loopholes that allow Russia to keep operating, maximizing the impact of these restrictions on the Russian economy.

Sitting inside the office, a new crypto task force was created to deal with the utilization of digital assets to skirt sanctions, an area where the EU has been especially active since July, when the bloc targeted the complete Russian crypto ecosystem in its 20th sanctions package.

“We know that crypto is a tool that has been used to circumvent our sanctions,” said EU spokesperson Siobhan McGarry. A7A5, a digital ruble stablecoin, registered transaction volumes of over $100 billion before facing a sanctions attack that dismantled a US dollar-based exchange network, effectively thwarting its usability and cratering operational volumes.

According to the Kyiv Independent, the task force is expected to work for 12 months and will have support from countries like Ukraine and the UK, which have already targeted Russian crypto networks before.

Acknowledging the rapid development of the ecosystem, in its 21st package of sanctions against Russia, the EU introduced the possibility of banning entire crypto jurisdictions, ordering European exchanges to stop transactions with cryptocurrency services established in specific named nations.

The U.S. is also tightening its crypto oversight. Recently, Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) blacklisted MEXC, a cryptocurrency exchange, for processing at least $16 billion in suspicious transactions between May 2021 and May 2026 linked to sanctioned entities in Iran, North Korea, and Russia.
