Galerie Retour de Voyage : Hans Silvester : Silver Silvester

Until April 30th, 2026, Galerie Retour de Voyage in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue presents the exhibition Silver Silvester, devoted to Hans Silvester’s black-and-white silver gelatin prints, made between 1958 and 1976.

Over a career spanning more than sixty-five years, Hans Silvester has built a rich and singular photographic body of work. While his color work, particularly in Ethiopia, is widely recognized, his early black-and-white photographs remain less well known.

The Hans Silvester exhibition reveals this foundational body of work through 27 silver gelatin prints, produced according to traditional processes, printed in editions of only five, numbered and signed. These works testify to the timeless strength of black-and-white silver printing: deep blacks, subtle grain, and controlled contrasts.

The photographs on view were selected for what they reveal about the formation of Hans Silvester’s gaze. Made between 1958 and 1976, they belong to a period in which the photographer was already asserting a demanding visual language, marked by compositional rigor, balance of lines, and constant attention to the relationship between human beings and their environment.

Neither anecdotal nor spectacular, these images privilege human presence, vernacular architecture, landscapes, and everyday gestures. Black and white, far from being a simple formal choice, makes it possible to focus on what is essential: light, matter, and the internal rhythm of the image.

What already appears strongly as Hans Silvester’s signature is a capacity to efface himself behind the subject, to photograph without imposing, in a respectful and sensitive relationship to reality. Each image thus becomes a place of encounter, where documentary meets a profoundly humanist dimension.

These photographs are fully part of the photo-reportage tradition as it developed in the 1960s. At that time, Hans Silvester collaborated with the Rapho agency, a major center of French humanist photography.

At that time, photo-reportage was neither spectacular nor event-driven: it relied on duration, proximity to its subjects, and careful observation of ways of life. Silvester travels, stops, looks, and photographs what he knows and understands. This method gives his images great documentary precision while moving beyond simple information to attain a sensitive and universal resonance.

Black-and-white silver print reinforces this language of reality. Mastery of framing, the ordering of planes, and the balance of masses convey a photography that is constructed and thoughtful, but never demonstrative.

The Hans Silvester exhibition inaugurates the Atelier of Galerie Retour de Voyage, a new space dedicated to photography.

After the Hans Silvester exhibition, the works will remain available to view by appointment, extending the experience for collectors and discerning amateurs.

The opening will take place in the presence of Hans Silvester, offering a privileged moment of exchange around his work and this foundational period of his oeuvre.
