Markevis Silver ’26MSA chose a career in education because of its power to transform the lives of others, but he realized he could expand his impact beyond his classroom by becoming a school leader.
Now, as he prepares to graduate from the NC State College of Education with his Master of School Administration, he feels his time in the NC State Educational Leadership Academy has prepared him for his next role as an assistant principal.
Meet Markevis:
Degree: Master of School Administration
Extracurriculars: NC State Educational Leadership Academy (NELA)
Why did you choose a career in education?
I chose education because I believe in its power to transform lives and communities. Growing up in Eastern North Carolina, public schools shaped my commitment to ensuring every student feels seen, valued and capable of success.
Why did you choose your degree focus?
I pursued school administration to expand my impact beyond my classroom. I wanted to lead instructional improvement, support teachers and transform systems to create equitable opportunities and strong outcomes for all students.
How do you believe the College of Education helped prepare you for this next step?
The program combined strong theory with real-world leadership experience. Through NELA, I developed skills in instructional leadership, data use and school improvement, while also growing in my ability to lead with purpose, clarity and confidence.
What’s next for you after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to step into an assistant principal role and continue growing as an instructional leader, with the long-term goal of becoming a superintendent!
