London’s blue-chip index is set to extend Monday’s losses this morning after a bruising showing following tension in European bond markets.

A bond-sell off hit Europe following tensions in France after the Prime Minister introduced a curfew to contain explosive riots.

The 10-year yield on French bonds – a direct reflection of the government’s cost to borrow – spiked around 13 basis points to 4.9 per cent. The spread between French and German 10-year yields widened to its highest closing level since early 2012 as investors priced in the risk of ongoing unrest across the country.

To add to pressures, oil prices were climbing towards the $110 per barrel mark, holding recent gains as investors weighed escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe against signs of robust energy flows from the Persian Gulf.
