GLASGOW, July 29 — Malaysia achieved its target of five gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after para long jump T20 world record holder Datuk Abdul Latif Romly delivered the country’s fifth gold medal last night.
Adding to the 29-year-old’s victory was fellow Malaysian and teammate Eljoe Gotuoh’s third place finish, which secured another bronze medal for Malaysia.
Battling heavy rain throughout the competition at Scotstoun Stadium, Abdul Latif successfully completed a leap of 7.17 metres (m) in his third attempt to secure the gold medal and complete the national contingent’s five-gold target for the Games.
Eljoe Gotuoh claimed the bronze medal with a leap of 6.51 m for a 1-3 podium finish for Malaysia, leaving Canada’s Noah Vucsics the silver with a jump of 6.66 m.
Earlier, weightlifter Muhammad Hafizuddin Roslin won Malaysia’s fourth gold medal in the men’s 88kg event.
The 22-year-old produced a combined lift of 345kg, comprising 162kg in the snatch and 183kg in the clean and jerk, with both lifts setting new Commonwealth Games records on his debut appearance.
Malaysia also added two silver medals through lawn bowlers Aleena Ahmad Nawawi and Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman in the women’s pairs, and Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple in the men’s singles.
Aleena and Syafiqa were beaten by England’s Amy Pharaoh and Sian Honnor in the final, while Izzat, the first Malaysian to win a medal in the men’s singles event, lost to England’s Sam Tolchard.
Syafiqa, who is five months pregnant, described the silver medal as the most meaningful gift for both herself and her unborn child.
In other lawn bowls action, world number one Emma Firyana Saroji won her opening match in the women’s singles, while Amirul Danial Abdul Rahim and Mohammad Soufi Rusli also began their men’s pairs campaign with victory.
Malaysia narrowly missed another medal in artistic gymnastics after Muhammad Sharul Aimy Kamaru Hisam finished fourth in the men’s vault following a tie-break. He recorded the same score as bronze medallist Neofytos Kyriakou of Cyprus but lost out on the podium.
Malaysia now sits sixth in the medal standings with five gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Australia leads the table with 35 gold, 18 silver and 27 bronze medals, followed by Canada (13 gold, 10 silver, 12 bronze) and England (10 gold, 18 silver, 15 bronze).
