Gold is positioned to keep gaining value as mounting government debt, widening deficits and currency depreciation intensify, while mining equities continue to deliver leveraged exposure to the metal’s price, according to Evy Hambro, BlackRock‘s global head of thematic and sector investing. In remarks to MoneyWeek reported by Kitco News, Hambro said the stagflation, weak dollar and geopolitical strain defining the current market look set to persist.
Hambro pointed to government bond markets as a signal that conditions are unhealthy, citing rising rates alongside very large debt loads and growing annual deficits that governments must fund, which he said places heavy pressure on the financial system. He described a reluctance among savers to keep lending to governments whose spending lacks a credible path to debt resolution, comparing it to lending to a business that loses money every year and must pay ever higher rates to attract capital.
Against that backdrop, Hambro identified real assets as a means of protecting purchasing power, listing infrastructure, commodities and gold. He noted that over roughly three decades the price of copper has climbed from about 60 cents a pound to around six dollars, while gold has risen from about $400 an ounce to about $4,000 an ounce, framing the metal as a long-term store of value that people are relearning to appreciate.

Hambro observed that gold allocations, common among wealth managers in the 1990s, faded in the early 2000s and have since returned at very small weightings that he considers below appropriate levels. He referenced a roughly 10% gold allocation as a form of insurance, arguing that the cost of carrying it is outweighed by the protection it provides when markets turn difficult. He also described a rebalancing approach in which profits from better-performing holdings are shifted back into gold to keep that insurance level steady.
On the bond market, Hambro urged diversification, warning against concentrating holdings in a single asset class. He suggested the least painful route for debt reduction is inflation, which implies governments and central banks may not pursue inflation targets as rigorously as they otherwise might.
Hambro said the gold price will mirror strain elsewhere in the financial system, rising if conditions worsen and reflecting improvement if they do, though he sees little prospect of rapid improvement. He added that BlackRock remains bullish on gold’s longer-term direction given the debt and deficits carried by governments worldwide, expecting continued near-term volatility tied to shifting monetary policy expectations and interest rates while viewing the broader trend as favorable.
On mining equities, Hambro said the leveraged relationship to the gold price has remained fully intact over recent years, with strong commodity performance matched by multiples of return in the equities, a pattern he said also appears in copper and other commodities. He attributed this to cost inflation at mines rising more slowly than prices, producing margin expansion. For exposure, he distinguished physically backed gold ETFs for pure price exposure from gold equities for greater risk and potential return, noting that equities can pay dividends and participate in growth and merger activity, and that a well-managed diversified portfolio of them can outperform the underlying commodity.
