Gold, silver futures rise on Tuesday


International gold and silver prices both advanced on Tuesday.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures for August delivery rose 0.30 percent to settle at 4,519.90 U.S. dollars per ounce, while silver futures for July delivery gained 0.40 percent to close at 75.556 dollars per ounce.

U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 228.91 points, or 0.45 percent, to 51,307.79. The Standard and Poor’s 500 Index gained 9.82 points, or 0.13 percent, to 7,609.78. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 7.09 points, or 0.03 percent, to 27,093.90.

Seven of the 11 primary Standard and Poor’s 500 sectors ended in positive territory. Utilities and materials led the gainers, rising 1.93 percent and 1.16 percent respectively, while communication services and healthcare posted the biggest losses, falling 2.61 percent and 0.99 percent, respectively.
