Hamilton American Classic Cushion | INTRODUCING

Nina Scally

Few watchmakers can honestly say they helped define the look of early 20th-century wristwatches, but Hamilton is absolutely one of them. Hollywood’s go-to watch brand has a deep history with cushion-shaped watches that goes back over a century. It all started in 1919 when the Pennsylvania-based company released a timepiece called “the Cushion.” To make it, Hamilton took a small pocket watch movement, the calibre 981, and fitted it into a rounded square case that looked like a seat cushion.

Hamilton doubled down on this geometry throughout the 1920s and 30s, releasing standout references like the Cushion A and Cushion B, both of which captured the peak of Art Deco style. Lately, these vintage shapes have made a huge comeback in the watch community. Part of that resurgence is thanks to the movie Oppenheimer, where Cillian Murphy wore a vintage Cushion B on screen. Hamilton actually sourced genuine pieces from collectors for the film to keep it historically accurate. Leaning into this heritage, the brand has dug into its archives to release the American Classic Cushion, bringing that exact 1926 look back for modern collectors.

The case

While many watch brands think bigger automatically means more masculine, Hamilton has scaled down the new American Classic Cushion by offering it in 30mm and 34mm sizes. The 30mm version, which measures a perfect 30x30mm square, has heaps of wrist presence despite its smaller footprint and reflects the industry’s renewed appreciation for refined, vintage-inspired proportions. Design-wise, it takes direct inspiration from the Cushion Plain (smooth polished bezel) and Cushion Engraved (geometric or floral bezel) models from 1926. For context, when Hamilton refreshed its line of strap watches this year, it also refreshed the movement and gave buyers a choice in how the bezel and case trim were styled. Today, collectors use these original design names to distinguish between the two distinct versions of the second-generation Cushion.

Whether you prefer the clean stainless steel option or the more vintage-looking yellow gold PVD iteration, both sit at only 8.1mm in height and feature a 16mm lug width that keeps the proportions perfectly balanced. Hamilton also gave this new cushion watch some great modern upgrades, like an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and 50 meters of water resistance.

The dials

The American Classic Cushion comes in a few different setups depending on the size you choose. The 30mm version offers two distinct looks: a textured, sandblasted beige dial with bold Arabic numerals, available in both steel and yellow gold PVD, or a dressier, crisp white dial with Roman numerals in steel. Both use glossy black hands and subtle Super-LumiNova on the markers.

If you step up to the larger 34mm model, the dial choices expand to silver sunray, beige, or black, all featuring luminous Arabic numerals and glossy, spear-shaped hands. Across the entire lineup, the standout feature is the small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock. By skipping a modern sweeping centre seconds hand for a traditional sub-dial, Hamilton kept the layout beautifully balanced and perfectly true to the 1920s era.

The movement

Mechanically, the American Classic Cushion is an incredibly solid offering. Inside is the new H-42 hand-wound calibre, which is based on the legendary ETA 7001 (originally the Peseux 7001 from the 1970s). Going with a manual-wind movement instead of an automatic is the most authentic choice Hamilton could have made, keeping that tactile connection to the watch. Hamilton has also modernised the movement with a Nivachron balance spring to resist daily magnetic fields and boosted the power reserve to a much more practical 57 hours. Somehow, the watchmaker has managed to make this feel like a true nod to its vintage archives, while still being a practical choice for everyday wear.

The strap

The strap options are both elegant and practical. Depending on the case and dial you choose, the watch comes on a black or brown leather strap. Hamilton is generally well-regarded for providing quality leather that collectors find supple straight out of the box, so this should require zero break-in time. The brand also smartly included quick-release spring bars, which means you can swap out the strap in seconds without any special tools. Hamilton gives you plenty of freedom to change the look, so you can easily switch the watch from casual wear to a proper dress piece in minutes.

The verdict

Ultimately, the American Classic Cushion proves that the allure of Art Deco-inspired watches is far from a fleeting trend. This cushion-shaped watch does the heritage reissue right. The brand has focused on all the details that really matter. It sits flat at just 8.1mm thick, and the 30mm and 34mm square footprints deliver more presence than the numbers might suggest. Add in modern upgrades to the H-42 hand-wound movement, like a Nivachron hairspring and a boosted 57-hour power reserve, and you get a beautifully proportioned piece that holds its own as a serious, everyday watch.
