Only ten of these solid gold Lego bricks exist worldwide, and one lucky bidder just dropped nearly $18,000 to claim this twenty four gram holy grail of toy collecting that was originally an exclusive corporate anniversary gift

Dorothy had her ruby slippers, King Arthur had Excalibur, Sherlock Holmes had his deerstalker hat and pipe, Robin Hood had his longbow, and you, a Lego fan, can have your very own gold Lego brick. The 2×4 Lego brick made of solid 585 yellow gold made it to the spring auction in Quedlinburg. Weighing approximately 24 grams and offered with a certificate and its original box, this lovely piece of yellow gold is really hard to come by.
Only about ten copies are believed to exist worldwide, owing to the corporate anniversary gifts Lego gave to select long-serving employees.

The 2×4-stud brick in original size, hallmarked on the side, with eight studs on top and the classic three hollow tubes underneath, was acquired for almost $18,000 by a German bidder, defeating Lego fans from the U.S. and Japan. The metal value of the same is around $2,200, but this little block is precious for reasons far beyond today’s gold economy. It is no wonder collectors refer to it as the “Holy Grail” of Lego bricks. The auction price was high, but not a record, as another gold Lego brick reportedly sold for €19,000 ($22000) in 2017.

Nonetheless this only highlights the craze and loyalty for Lego is intact. The gold Lego brick one can never find in a toy store came from Lego GmbH in Hohenwestedt. This particular brick was documented by an accompanying letter dated October 1986 and was presented for a 20-year service anniversary.
