To mark the centenary of the Oyster, Rolex honors the timepiece that helped transform modern watchmaking. The beloved classic was introduced in 1926 by founder Hans Wilsdorf as the world’s first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch, combining precision, durability and practicality at a time when pocket watches still dominated daily life.

Its reputation was built through performance rather than promotion. In 1927, British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze wore an Oyster while crossing the English Channel, proving its reliability under demanding conditions. In the decades that followed, the watch accompanied explorers, athletes, scientists and adventurers from mountain summits to ocean depths, cementing its place as one of horology’s defining achievements. What began as a groundbreaking case design evolved into the foundation of Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual collection. Over the years, it has become a symbol of accomplishment, worn by cultural icons and achievers including Roger Federer, Zendaya, Martin Scorsese and James Cameron.

At Watches and Wonders 2026, Rolex unveiled a refined new chapter for the Oyster Perpetual with 18K yellow gold and 18K Everose gold versions of the Oyster Perpetual 28 and 34. Featuring richly colored lacquer dials and newly satin-finished cases and bracelets, the models bring a quiet sophistication to one of the brand’s most enduring designs.
