Since its revival in 2008, the Moritz Grossmann manufacture has focused on making watches with traditional Saxon construction and meticulous hand-finishing, exemplifying the idea of Schönstes deutsches Handwerk. The Tremblage, introduced in 2021, quickly became one of its most expressive pieces, showcasing a rare hand-engraving technique applied to German silver dials. Now, for the 200th anniversary of Moritz Grossmann, “a genius watchmaker and ambitious scientist, profound author, initiator of the German Watchmaking School in Glashütte”, the brand revisits this model with the new Tremblage Gold editions, with solid gold dials and precious metal cases, maintaining the restrained beauty and highly technical character of the original.
The new Tremblage Gold edition keeps the familiar Benu case, measuring 41mm in diameter and 11.35mm in height, and is now offered in rose gold or platinum. The construction also remains unchanged, with the crown and small pusher, and sapphire crystals front and back. The signature crown-and-pusher mechanism separates winding and setting functions: pulling the crown stops the movement, while a pusher at 4 o’clock restarts it, improving precision and protecting the movement.
Instead of German silver, both editions now use a solid rose gold base dial, engraved by hand using the tremblage technique: guiding a burin in controlled, repetitive motions, the artisans create a uniform, finely textured surface. The process is highly demanding, requiring days of work per dial and absolute consistency; any deviation results in rejection.
As before, the numerals, logo and tracks are not applied but carved in relief, then polished by hand to contrast with the matte, grained background. Two executions are offered. The rose gold case version features a black rhodium-plated dial, creating a strong contrast with the polished elements and matching gold hands. The platinum version retains the natural tone of the gold dial, paired with polished steel hands. Both retain the historic “M. Grossmann” logo as used in 1875.
Powering the watch is the in-house calibre 100.1, unchanged from earlier Tremblage models. This hand-wound movement follows traditional Glashütte construction with a 2/3 plate in untreated German silver, pillars, and a large balance wheel beating at 18,000 vibrations/hour. The movement offers a 42-hour power reserve and features the brand’s proprietary balance with variable inertia and micrometric adjustment.
Raised gold chatons, hand-engraved balance and escape wheel cocks, brown-violet annealed screws, and extensive hand-polished bevels underline the artisanal approach to finishing. A special “1826” engraving on the balance cock marks the watchmaker’s birth year. Both versions are worn on hand-stitched alligator straps and are limited to just eight pieces each.
