Hedge Funds Got Caught In A Crowded AI Unwind

ets as funds cut overall exposure fast. That kind of forced shrinking – often called “de-grossing” – can make supposedly market-neutral portfolios move in the same direction at once.

The strain showed up in the most capital-hungry parts of the AI supply chain. Reuters noted that AI-focused cloud provider CoreWeave’s bonds slid enough to push yields above 15%, a sign lenders were demanding a much bigger return to hold its debt. The unwind also rippled through chip-heavy equity markets in Asia: Reuters said South Korea’s KOSPI fell 8% to a six-month low on Thursday and Taiwan stocks dropped more than 3%.

Why should I care?

Zooming out: Goldman’s “never together” day is suddenly happening three times a year.

Goldman said three big hedge-fund styles – fundamental long-short, systematic, and multi-strategy – didn’t all fall more than 0.8% on the same day from COVID-19 through end-2025. This year, it’s already happened three times.

That’s a hint that crowding is back: lots of managers owning similar trades, often financed with borrowed money. When a macro shock hits, the quickest way to cut risk is to sell what you own, not carefully rebalance, so correlations jump and “diversified” books can behave like one big risk-off trade.

The bigger takeaway is that AI isn’t just a tech story anymore: it’s tied into rates, credit markets, and global supply chains. That’s why stress can show up simultaneously in US growth stocks, high-yield corporate debt like CoreWeave’s, and semiconductor-heavy markets such as South Korea and Taiwan.
