MMG to Raise US$1.6 Billion Through Share Placement and Convertible Bonds – News and Statistics

MMG, the offshore metal-producing unit of state-backed China Minmetals Corp, has announced plans to raise a combined US$1.6 billion through the sale of placement shares and convertible bonds. The company disclosed this move in a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange, as reported by the source.

The firm intends to raise HK$6.27 billion (US$800.4 million) from a placement of 705.9 million shares. Additionally, it aims to secure US$800 million from the offering of bonds that can be converted into Hong Kong-listed shares at a later date.

MMG is capitalizing on a surge in critical metals, which are part of the global enthusiasm for artificial intelligence that has driven price increases for commodities such as copper and other materials used to generate electricity and support computing power. Copper futures have risen 15 percent in New York this year.

Shares of MMG fell 11 percent to HK$8.71 on Tuesday, erasing all gains for the year. The company will sell the stock at HK$8.88 each, representing an 8.8 percent discount to Monday’s closing price. The placement shares will account for approximately 5.5 percent of the enlarged total share count.

According to the exchange filing, MMG will use the proceeds from both the stock and bond offerings to refinance existing loans, support project expansion, fund strategic acquisitions and investments, and replenish working capital. The company produces metals including copper, zinc, and gold.
