New York Digital Asset Market Sees Pullback as Bitcoin Falls Below $80,000 Threshold and Investors Turn Cautious

资金转向,比特币主导地位松动?

On local time January 26, the New York digital asset market declined broadly, with Bitcoin (BTC) failing to hold the key $80,000 level, becoming the core driver of market weakness. Concentrated liquidation of leveraged positions combined with weak spot buying pressure weighed on market sentiment. CoinMarketCap data showed that the total market capitalization of digital assets stood at $2.68 trillion that day, down 0.61% from the previous day, while 24-hour trading volume surged to $68.42 billion, an increase of 84.35%, indicating a notable rise in trading activity amid the downturn. Bitcoin’s market dominance remained at 60%, and the Fear and Greed Index stood at 43, placing it in the neutral range as investors largely stayed on the sidelines. Bitcoin touched the $80,000 level twice during intraday trading but failed to hold onto its gains on both occasions, closing at $79,841.94, down 0.81% for the day.

Cryptocurrency Movements Diverge as Capital Seeks Safe-Haven Opportunities

The internal market showed a divergent pattern, with most mainstream tokens following the broader market decline while a small number of coins bucked the trend and closed higher. Ethereum (ETH) fell 1.49% to $2,312.22; Ripple (XRP) dropped 0.35% to $1.29; SOL declined 1.22% to $100.35; and Dogecoin (DOGE) slipped 0.26% to $0.07704. Binance Coin (BNB) edged up 0.08% to $742.13, ZEC rose 1.05% to $1,229.82, and HYPE gained 2.50%, leading the performance.

Institutional Capital Flows Remain Volatile as Macro Decisions Sway Market Sentiment

Institutional capital flows swung back and forth, further amplifying market uncertainty. Bitcoin spot ETFs saw inflows of $1.075 billion in an earlier period, followed by outflows of $774 million, with weekly net inflows of only $301 million, reflecting a cautious stance among institutional investors. The $81,000 level became a short-term dividing line for the market, and with the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision approaching, macroeconomic uncertainty pushed market volatility higher. Market views diverged noticeably, with some analysts expecting Bitcoin’s volatility range to reach 10% to 15% around the FOMC meeting, potentially breaking above $86,000 and even touching above $90,000 in an optimistic scenario; more cautious views held that if the price fails to hold above $81,000, it could retreat to the $78,400 to $79,100 range, with the possibility of testing $76,000 if buying support is absent. JPMorgan (JPM) maintained a prudent attitude toward crypto assets, both flagging the risk of going to zero and projecting an annual return expectation of 10%.

Long-Term Value Logic Comes to the Fore

The crypto market is currently in a phase where short-term speculation and long-term value judgment are intertwined. In the short term, leveraged liquidations, insufficient spot demand, and Federal Reserve policy contribute to elevated volatility risk; over the long term, Bitcoin possesses unique value distinct from other tokens, underpinned by network security, institutional recognition, and its cross-cycle survival record. Short-term investors need to watch for changes at key price levels and the impact of macroeconomic policy, while from a long-term allocation perspective, greater emphasis is placed on the value support brought by Bitcoin’s underlying technological upgrades and the continued accumulation of its ecosystem.
