Avalanche warning in effect for Silver Valley

Recent heavy snow combined with wind will likely create widespread areas of unstable snow in upper elevations and a high avalanche warning has been issued for elevations above 5,500′ in the St. Joe Mountains of the Silver Valley, Selkirk Range and Cabinet Mountains of North Idaho and Western Montana.

The Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center announced that due to heavy snowfall and strong winds, dangerous avalanche conditions are expected. Natural avalanches are possible, and there is a high likelihood of human triggered avalanches on slopes over 32 degrees.

The warning went into effect Tuesday, Jan. 9 and remains in effect until Thursday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m.

The avalanche danger for the warning area will remain high through Thursday. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.
