Canadian women collect silver medal in artistic gymnastics at Commonwealth Games

“I’m so excited to be back competing. This is my first all-around competition since returning, and I’ve only recently started training vault and floor again, so those events are still coming along,” said women’s all-around finalist Ellie Black.

“I’m really proud to be back competing all-around, to be with this amazing team, and to experience the Commonwealth Games again. I’m just having so much fun.”

Ellie Black and Fontaine both advanced to the women’s all-around final after superb qualification performances. Black topped the standings with a score of 53.400 to qualify first overall, while Fontaine secured her place in the final in fifth with 52.050.

Canada’s depth was on full display in the individual qualifications, with the team earning multiple apparatus final spots.

Fontaine topped the vault standings with a score of 13.750, while Ellie Black advanced to the uneven bars final in second place with 13.850. Ellie Black and Fontaine will also represent Canada in the balance beam final after qualifying fifth and sixth, respectively, with scores of 12.900 and 12.850. Redick was named second reserve on uneven bars with a score of 12.650.

Oliver Dawson led the Canadian charge in the pool on the second day of the Commonwealth Games but came up .05 shy of the podium in the men’s 100-metre breaststroke final.

Competing in his first Commonwealth Games, the 18-year-old from Grand Prairie, Alta., fed off a successful summer to finish fourth against a deep men’s field with a time of 59.70.

Ella Jansen, of Burlington, Ont., earned a spot in the finals for the second-straight night. The Etobicoke Swim Club athlete placed eighth in the women’s 200-metre freestyle test with a time of 1:59.18.

Paralympian, Emma Van Dyk, was also seventh in the 200M S14 freestyle event. The Brock Niagara Aquatics swimmer clocked a time of 2:31.24.

Canada has won four medals in the first two days of the Commonwealth Games, including one gold and one silver.
