Dundalk IT students win silver at construction competition

Four 4th year students from Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT)’s Construction Management course took home silver at the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Tomorrow’s Leaders 2024, national student competition.

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is the professional body that accredits the 3rd level construction Management courses.

They also confer chartered member status on construction professionals following a career of training and professional development. The DkIT Level 7 and Level 8 degree in Construction Management course achieved accreditation in spring 2023.

Each year the CIOB hold a national Student Challenge. This year the competition took place in Atlantic Technological University (ATU), Sligo, during the ATU International Construction Conference. Seven teams from various universities made up of Quantity Surveyors, Engineers, Architects and Construction Management students took part.

The teams were faced with a project brief and were required during the day to compile a project plan based on Site Logistics, Procurement Management, Design Team Management, Health and Safety Programme, Cashflow, Resource Schedule and finally Quality Control. DkIT’s winning team consisted of Ben Blakemore, Tom Minogue, Luke Dowdall and Peter McBride. The team were absolutely thrilled to take second place and receive the much sought after CIOB silver medals.

Brian Harmon, Lecturer in the Department of Built Environment, DkIT said:

“We are so proud of this winning team, they made their classmates and lecturers, the Department of Built Environment and DkIT also very proud.

“The teams were faced with a real commercial project brief and were required during the day to compile a project plan to deliver the proposed development on time, within cost whilst meeting quality requirements.  The team of students put ‘their shoulders to the wheel’ and came second and received CIOB silver medals”.
