New artistic vision for 2026 Britannia

The U.K.’s Royal Mint has introduced the 2026 Proof Britannia coin, featuring a new artistic interpretation of Britain’s enduring national symbol. The design highlights Britannia as a figure of strength and resilience, reflecting the nation’s long maritime tradition and its ability to endure turbulent times.

The reverse design was created by American coin designer Emily Damstra, whose work has previously appeared on coins for the Royal Canadian Mint and the United States Mint. Her composition shows Britannia standing firm against strong winds and crashing waves, holding a trident and shield. A lighthouse rises in the background above the cliffs, reinforcing the theme of guidance and stability amid rough seas.

An inscription reading “Majesty, Justice and Peace” appears on the coin, a phrase drawn from a 1941 address delivered by British prime minister Winston Churchill to the United States Congress. The obverse carries the effigy of King Charles III by sculptor Martin Jennings, continuing the transition to the new monarch’s portrait on modern British coinage.

The Proof Britannia coins are struck in precious metals using specially prepared dies and polished blanks to achieve their highly detailed finish. For more details about the coin and the Britannia series, visit royalmint.com/britannia.
