If silver utensils or jewellery are not cared for properly, they can tarnish and turn black, leading to deterioration. This blackening occurs due to a reaction between the silver and sulphur and other chemicals present in the atmosphere. However, there are home remedies that can restore the shine of tarnished silver.

Dhananjay Soni, who operates Sona Mahal near Thana Road in Medininagar, Jharkhand, suggests that these remedies can revive even the oldest silver items, eliminating the need for a goldsmith. He explains that only genuine silver tarnishes, so blackening is an indication of authenticity.

Try These Home Remedies

Harmful chemicals in the air are a major cause of tarnishing. One remedy involves using tamarind.

  1. Soak Rs 5 worth tamarind in water until it dissolves.
  2. Submerge the silver ornaments in the tamarind water and gently clean off any dirt.
  3. After 20 minutes, remove the ornaments and clean them with a cotton cloth to reveal a clean and sparkling finish.

For plain silver items like utensils or coins, Colgate powder can be used.

  • Soak the silver item in water
  • Apply some colgate powder to a cotton cloth and clean the item.

This simple method will leave your silver looking shiny and new.
