RMC marks 150 years with commemorative silver coin

The Royal Canadian Mint has struck a new silver collector coin marking the 150th anniversary of the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC), celebrating one of the country’s most influential military and academic institutions.

Founded in Kingston in 1876, RMC is Canada’s oldest military university and has educated generations of military officers, public servants, engineers, scientists and leaders. To commemorate the milestone, the Mint unveiled a 2026 $20 fine silver coin during a ceremony held on the college campus attended by students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the RMC community.

The commemorative issue is struck in fine silver and carries a limited worldwide mintage of 6,500 pieces. It retails for $239.95.

Designed by artist Neil Hamelin, the reverse highlights several symbols associated with the institution’s history and achievements. Dominating the design is the iconic RMC clock tower, above which flies the National Flag of Canada. Also featured is the banner from the college flag bearing the motto “Truth Duty Valour,” along with the anniversary dates “1876-2026.”

Five stars incorporated into the design pay tribute to former RMC cadets who later became Canadian Space Agency astronauts: Marc Garneau, Chris Hadfield, Michael McKay, Joshua Kutryk and Jeremy Hansen. According to the Mint, the stars also symbolize the broader achievements of RMC graduates whose contributions have extended well beyond military service.

The obverse features the effigy of King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

The coin was unveiled as RMC celebrates a century and a half of service to Canada. The institution has built an international reputation for military education, officer training and research while producing graduates who have served in conflicts, peacekeeping missions and public life throughout Canada and abroad.

Brig.-Gen. Pascal Godbout, RMC’s 49th commandant, said the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the college’s contributions and the role it continues to play in developing future leaders.

For collectors, the coin offers a military-themed commemorative issue tied to a significant Canadian anniversary while recognizing an institution that has played a central role in the country’s defence and leadership development since the 19th century.
