Silver Pines isn’t without technical issues, either. Clipping, unpredictable character movement, and occasional audio dropouts interrupted an otherwise well-developed experience. Nothing derailed my playthrough, but these hiccups were noticeable enough that a few patches would go a long way. I shouldn’t be surprised, though. It seems like every game these days launches needing some extra work.
Silver Pines begins with a missing-person investigation, and, above all else, I was never eager to put the case away. Its atmosphere, storytelling, and soundtrack combine to deliver an excellent horror experience, even if the combat doesn’t quite measure up.
If you love Silent Hill’s cryptic characters or David Lynch’s bizarre small-town mysteries, this is an easy recommendation. Those looking for deep, demanding combat may come away disappointed. Twin Peaks taught us that the owls aren’t what they seem, and Silver Pines embraces that same philosophy. It may look like a tribute, but it plays like the real deal.
